Chernobyl was the most devastating nuclear disaster in history but its casualties weren’t just human, it also killed a god.
When Kupala the Slavic goddess of joy and the summer sun vanishes the world is thrown into a never ending winter. As the human population dwindles from war and starvation the creatures of fairy tales and folklore begin to reassert themselves in the world.
Nicholas is an undead who had once been a soldier for the German Democratic Republic. Now that civilization and his old life gone he goes on a journey across the Eastern Bloc in pursuit of the woman who murdered him.
On his travels Nicholas meets Emmy a young woman whose father intends on selling her into slavery. In their time together Nicholas begins to teach her how to survive and begins to develop affection for her.
Emmy believes that even if he is a monster Nicholas may not be irrevocably damned and hopes to redeem him. But as they get closer to his murderer and his the source of his obsession Nicholas begins to fear the Emmy is in mortal danger, both from the monster they pursue and from his own hunger and rage.
