BACKSTORY PAGE

Previously On. Runs along the left side of the page interspersed with downsized panels from the previous issue where/if space permits.

Dimitri Sokolov makes bad decisions. Fleeing from a failed drug deal, he encountered the Shadowmancer, a sorcerer capable of manipulating the essence of shadows and drawing knowledge from the darkness. In a fit of desperation, Dimitri grabbed a mysterious ritual knife and buried it into the old warlock’s heart. The blow let off an explosion of magical energy and left Dimitri baring the mantle of the Shadowmancer.

Dimitri has continued his studies of the mystic arts, but his scholarly work was interrupted by the arrival of his old girlfriend Nikki. She asked him to come with her to Seattle to help her father and save him from a mysterious blackmailer.

The one responsible turned out to be an old enemy of his named Jessica. She offered him a job working for her new organization dedicated to using arcane power for blackmail and extortion on an international stage. When he refused, she moved to plan B- just kill him with a bomb…

Character Bios. Runs along the right side of the page and each section is matched with a close up of the character’s face.

1. DIMITRI SOKOLOV:       Dimitri has worn many hats, amateur martial artist, gangster, graduate student, and sorcerer. He’s the child of a family of Russian immigrants originally from the east coast. After his mother died in childbirth, his father let Dimitri be raised by his Uncle Vlad, who installed the boy with a strong Mafiosi sense of honor.

2. NIKKI BARNES:              Nikki was an undergraduate at PSU. Originally from Seattle, she came to Oregon to attend college. Soon after arriving she met Dimitri and the two have had a close relationship until their recent breakup. She is currently recovering from a painkiller addiction.

3. DAVID HUGHES:            David is a graphic artist who lives next door to Dimitri and Nikki. They were only generally acquainted until recently, when Dimitri confided in him that he had begun to hear voices. He has a soft-heart for charity cases.

4. JUSTIN AVERY:               Justin is a reporter for the Oregonian. He keeps an open mind and pursues his story no matter where it leads him, and never lets his assumptions get in the way of the truth. He has recently begun a romantic relationship with David.

5. MR. BARNES:                   Nikki’s father is the owner of a large software design company located in Seattle, Washington. He’s a survivor of the dot-com economic bubble, which he credits to his callous attitude in business. His only soft spot is his family.

6. BRANDON WAYNE:       Brandon was Nikki’s friend since they were children. Their parents were business partners, and since the death of his own father, Brandon has been treated like an adopted son by Mr. Barnes. He displays all the typical symptoms of corporate sociopathy.

7. JESSICA GORDAN:         Jess is a strange woman who was the lover and advisor of a major crime boss for years, and acted as the real power behind the throne. Although not a sorceress herself, she has evidenced a knowledge of the occult far greater than the average.

8. THE TECHNOMANCER: The Technomancer was an orphan, raised by aging hippy grandparents who had studied the occult all their lives. From a young age he combined their new age shamanism with his own intuitive affinity for computers to create a new hybrid form of technomagic.

Panel 2. PIERRE opens the door for JAMES.

Panel 3. PIERRE escorts JAMES into the main room.

Panel 4. In the sitting room, DAVID and JUSTIN are already waiting for them. PIERRE and JAMES also sit down.

1. JAMES:                              Alright, this had better be good.

PAGE TWO (six panels)

Panel 1. JUSTIN begins giving a presentation, with pictures of the solar eclipse on the television. JAMES looks incredulous and DAVID raises his hand. PIERRE sits back and observes.

1. JUSTIN:                              I’ll just get straight into it. Something in this city is killing people, and it isn’t human.

2. JAMES:                              You made a power point presentation about this?

3. DAVID:                              I made it actually.

4. PIERRE:                             Perhaps we should allow Justin to speak his piece and save our questions for afterwards.

Panel 2. JAMES sits back in his chair. JUSTIN resumes his presentation. The slide has changes to a map of the city covered in points, resembling his conspiracy map from the end of issue 6.

5. JAMES:                              Sure, I’m sorry. Please, go ahead.

6. JUSTIN:                              Thank-you.

7. JUSTIN:                              Something was released into the city during the eclipse. In the past few months, the violent crime and suicide rates in the city have quadrupled. We didn’t see anything like this in the aftermath of the previous eclipse.

Panel 3. JAMES sits forwards again. JUSTIN continues his presentation and the slide has changed to crime scene photos.

8. JAMES:                              If it started during the eclipse, then we know who’s responsible. It’s Dimitri.

9. JUSTIN:                              That was where my initial investigation led me as well. However, when I had the opportunity to speak to him in person, I discovered that he didn’t know anything about these deaths.

Panel 4. JAMES still seems upset. JUSTIN’s presentation has moved to memorial photos of average looking citizens.

10. JAMES:                            I don’t suppose it occurred to you that he could be lying?

11. JUSTIN:                            It did actually. But these victims were all average people, nothing like the skinheads, bikers, and militia member he had been busy with.

12. JUSTIN:                            Now he’s left the city and these mysterious deaths aren’t stopping. In fact, they’re becoming more frequent.

Panel 5. Everyone in the room looks at each other ominously. The presentation has moved to a picture of the desiccated body from the previous issue.

13. JUSTIN:                            The body you and your partner were called to yesterday wasn’t the first found in this condition. The department has been trying to keep it quiet

14. PIERRE:                           The Portland police don’t have the resources to meet this threat. The federal government does, of course, but they seem to be entirely focused on events in Texas at the moment.

15. DAVID:                            We’ve been conducting our own investigation, but we need your help. We’re the only ones who can stop this thing from killing anyone else.

16. JAMES:                            I…

Panel 6. A close up of JAMES looking resigned.

17. JAMES:                            Fine.

18. JAMES:                            But when is Dimitri getting back? Because if he thinks he can take some sort of a vacation while all this is going on-

Panel 3. DIMITRI smirks at the TECHNOMANCER.

6. DIMITRI:                           Go ahead.

8. TECHNOMANCER:         Basically, I had complete access to all her money- Well… strictly speaking, it’s all the World Wildlife Federation’s money as of twelve seconds ago.

Panel 4. DIMITRI and the TECHNOMANCER walk through the underground tunnels.

9. TECHNOMANCER:         I also have access to all her blackmail records on her network. I could delete them, but there’s no guarantee she hasn’t made local backups on a flash drive or something.

Panel 5. DIMITRI stops the TECHNOMANCER and they look at each other.

6. DIMITRI:                           I guess I’ll just have to shoot you then.

7. JESS:                                   I’m sure you’d love to, that’s why you tried to trick me into trying to go for my gun. But I didn’t, and your insufferable ‘code of honor’ won’t let you shoot an unarmed woman in the back.

14. TECHNOMANCER:       Hey, you dumb ho! The cops are two minutes out, might want to get a move on!

Panel 6. JESS begins to run with a look of frustration on her fate. Behind her DIMITRI and the TECHNOMANCER vanish completely.
